What’s involved

An aquaculture assistant technician supports the running of the farm, fishery, hatchery or nursery. They perform tasks in breeding or raising fish or other aquatic products. Technicians can be involved with collecting data for research projects for health and nutrition.  

Sectors include salmon, cod, trout and barramundi and other marine species including prawns, lobsters, scallops, crabs and oysters.

How do they spend their day?

Working in aquaculture, an assistant technician completes tasks such as:

  • Assisting with the breeding program
  • Monitoring water quality
  • Feeding routines and nutrition
  • Collection of data and record-keeping
  • Animal health monitoring
  • General maintenance

Training on the job is available, employers prefer candidates that have completed a qualification to ensure basic knowledge of Aquaculture.

Able to use testing equipment and use technology for data entry. A forklift licence or a coxswains ticket would be highly regarded.

Enjoys working outdoors on and around water, physically fit, cares about the health and wellbeing of animals and attention to detail.
