Biosecurity officers can work directly for companies managing biosecurity plans and managing risks or for Government agencies conducting assessments, investigations or providing authoritative advice and guidance on good pest and disease management and practice.

Biosecurity officers work in various locations including ports and airports to ensure marine pests and diseases are identified and contained, completing tasks such as:

  • Inspecting vessels and cargo
  • Conducting risk assessments and providing advice on management plans
  • Communicating best practice marine biosecurity requirements to industry stakeholders
  • Identifying, containing, and reporting pests and diseases

A Bachelor of Biosecurity Science. PSP40416 Certificate IV in Government Investigation is highly regarded as an additional Qualification.

A degree in biosecurity, marine science, or a related field is often required. Familiarity with biosecurity protocols and regulations is mandatory

Biosecurity Act 2015, a good understanding of marine pests and disease, biofouling risk management and mitigation.

Effective communication skills and attention to detail, enjoys working outdoors on and around water, at seaports or on vessels.
