What’s involved

Hatchery technicians provide assistance with the growing of marine or freshwater animals. They assist with the breeding and farming of fish such as salmon, cod, trout and barramundi and other marine species including prawns, lobsters, scallops, crabs, oysters and other marine species.  

How do they spend their day?

Hatchery technicians work to ensure the farming enterprise is running smoothly with tasks such as:

  • Water quality testing and analyzing results for improvement
  • Using software to maintain accurate data collection
  • Conducting health checks and providing treatments
  • Monitoring feeding and nutrition
  • Live feeding
  • Grading, weighing animals
  • Lifting and cleaning nets
  • Completing general maintenance

SFI30119 Certificate III in Aquaculture. Some employers may require you to hold additional certifications, such as a boat or forklift licence

Experience in fish hatcheries or nurseries is valuable to employers, Certificate III or IV in Aquaculture or in a related field is often preferred.

Hatchery Technicians use technology to monitor water quality, assist with disease identification and control, monitor nutrition and feeding routines, collect and analyse data, assist with daily tasks and general maintenance.

Interested in marine environments and assisting with research, likes working physically and outdoors, has good observation skills, attention to detail and a commitment to the health and welfare of animals.
