What’s involved

Policy Officers can work for Federal or State Government departments, their role is to support and advise seafood industry stakeholders on operational and administrative policies that govern the production and sustainability of fishing and aquaculture. Policy officers support and advise industry stakeholders on operational and administrative requirements for compliance.

How do they spend their day?

A policy officer works out in the field and in an office, completing tasks such as:

  • Responding to industry stakeholders and members of the public
  • Undertaking assessment of aquaculture leases and permits
  • Maintaining and communicating disaster and emergency response procedures
  • Attending and presenting at industry forums and events
  • Writing reports

SFI30119 Certificate III in Aquaculture or higher and PSP40416 Certificate IV in Government Investigation

A relevant degree in public policy, natural resource management, or a related field is often required. Knowledge of government policies and regulations related to aquaculture or fisheries is important. Previous work in Government or aquaculture and current driver’s licence would be an advantage

The ability to work collaboratively with the aquaculture industry and stakeholders, share information and provide guidance on compliance with Government legislation.

Ability to communicate with people at all levels and backgrounds, attention to detail, strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to provide authoritative advice.
