What’s involved

A feeder working in aquaculture is the person that is responsible for overseeing the feed requirements, nutrition and feeding routines of aquatic animals. Depending on the industry sector, feeding may be done manually or by operating feeding equipment and cameras remotely.

Sectors include: salmon, cod, trout, barramundi, abalone, oysters, prawns, crabs and lobsters.

How do they spend their day?

Working on an aquacultural farm, feeders spend their day completing tasks such as:

  • Loading equipment and supplies
  • Taking advice from nutritionists or feed managers
  • Completing feeding routines
  • Monitoring feeding levels in animals
  • Testing or monitoring water quality
  • General maintenance
  • Keeping accurate feeding records

Formal qualifications may not be required for entry-level positions. On-the-job training and understanding of fish feeding practices are necessary.
