Overview

What’s involved

Remotely operated vehicles (ROV's) are operated by specialists on a surface ship, much in the same way aerial drones are operated on land. They are used to inspect underwater structures, monitor the marine environment, maintain and repair damaged equipment at depth, assess stock health and to conduct environmental impact studies amongst a multitude of other tasks that in the past would have been the role of divers to undertake.

How do they spend their day?

An ROV pilot works on a vessel, platform, or onshore and completes tasks such as:

  • Planning the dive tasks
  • Communicating with the ROV supervisor
  • Prestart checks
  • Checking for hazards
  • ROV navigation
  • Monitoring weather conditions
  • Completing the dive tasks safely
  • Analysing data
  • ROV maintenance
