What’s involved

A commerical diver can work in aquaculture, fisheries or deep-sea fishing and follows strict safety protocols for the use of dive equipment to support the collection or production of fish and other aquatic species.

How do they spend their day?

A Commercial Diver works from a fishing vessel and completes tasks such as:

  • General maintenance and repair of nets and equipment
  • Monitoring and reporting animal health observations
  • Equipment retrieval
  • Collection of aquatic species
  • Operation of underwater cameras

The Australian Diver Accreditation Scheme (ADAS) occupational scuba to 30m qualification (part 1) is the first level of certification as a commercial diver and must be completed as a prerequisite for the second level, ADAS part 2 Occupational SSBA to 30m.

Completion of a recognised commercial diving course from a registered training organisation (RTO) is essential. Certification in Occupational SCUBA to at least AS/NZS 2299.1 (or equivalent) is typically required.

Current commercial dive licence, medical certificate, first aid and advanced resuscitation.

Must be medically fit and healthy, works well in a team, responsible for safety of self and others.
