A master fisher is an experienced and skilled professional who operates fishing vessels and leads fishing expeditions, using their expertise to locate and catch fish. Long hours at sea are often required of the master fisherman who can work independently or leading a crew.

Relevant maritime certifications and licenses are necessary dependant on the size and operational capacity of the vessel such as MAR40320 Certificate IV in Maritime Operations ( Master up to 45 metres Near Coastal) or MAR30921 Certificate III in Maritime Operations (Master less than 24 Metres Near Coastal) plus the Australian Maritime Safety Authority required hours of sea service, a medical and eyesight certificate, completion of Australian Maritime Safety Authority task book, completion of an approved Australian Maritime Safety Authority first aid course and radio proficiency certificate.

Extensive experience as a fisher and vessel operation is required.

Proficiency in operating fishing vessels and navigation systems, expertise in various fishing methods and equipment, coastlines, marine hazards and safety, commercial fishing licence requirements, weather and tides, biosecurity, maintenance, radio and satellite communication, marine vessel and equipment operation and emergency response.

Highly responsible, physically fit and the ability to work long hours at sea.
