What’s involved

A snorkel harvester is responsible for collecting seafood, such as shellfish or seaweed, from underwater beds or farms. They typically work in shallow coastal waters and use snorkelling equipment to perform their duties.

A snorkel harvester spends their day in the water completing tasks such as 

  • Collecting seafood from seabeds or aquaculture farms 
  • Sorting, grading and storage of seafood 
  • Cleaning, packaging and labeling of seafood for transport 
  • General equipment maintenance

There is no formal qualification for this role, however SFI20219 Certificate II in Fishing Operations would provide the snorkel harvester with basic knowledge of marine pests, biosecurity and harvesting techniques

Previous experience in snorkelling, diving, or underwater work is beneficial 

Different species of seafood and their harvesting techniques. Coastlines and weather conditions, familiarity with equipment such as snorkels, masks, and wetsuits, understanding of environmental regulations and conservation practices.
