What’s involved

Hatchery managers oversee the whole operation for the breeding and rearing of marine or freshwater animals. They are responsible for feeding and health routines, water quality, waste management, managing people and onsite safety, setting budgets and production targets.

Working in an office and outdoors, hatchery managers work to ensure the farming enterprise is running smoothly with tasks such as:

  • Setting and achieving growth targets
  • Using computer software to monitor breeding and rearing systems
  • Monitoring water quality

  • Liaising with nursery employees and running meetings

Bachelor of Marine Science or SFI50119 Diploma of Aquaculture 

A degree or diploma in aquaculture, fisheries, or a related field is often required. Experience in managing fish nurseries or hatcheries is important 

Hatchery Managers understand all facets of the breeding and growing enterprise and use their expertise and experience to manage a team of nursery technicians and assistants for successful growing operations.
