This course will give you the skills to make, repair and maintain fishing equipment on a fishing vessel.
Deckhand
A deckhand (or fishing hand) helps with the running of a commercial vessel completing various tasks like loading supplies, mooring and docking, deploying fishing gear, catch handling and sorting, bycatch management, net mending, stock handling, harvesting, cleaning equipment, radio communications, using and maintaining onboard machinery and equipment.
Sectors include tuna, pearls, wild catch species (e.g. whiting, salmon, prawns, mackerels etc), abalone, snapper, crabs, lobsters and aquaculture industries like Atlantic salmon and kingfish.
First Mate
A first mate is part of the crew and reports directly to the skipper as the second in command on the ship or marine vessel. The first mate can take over in an emergency and is responsible for navigation, anchoring and docking, onboard safety, communication and managing the daily tasks of the crew.
Commercial Diver
A commerical diver can work in aquaculture, fisheries or deep-sea fishing and follows strict safety protocols for the use of dive equipment to support the collection or production of fish and other aquatic species.
Marine Engineer
A marine engineer works with diesel engines, steam plants and gas turbines to ensure the internal systems of a ship or vessel such as propulsion, electrical, refrigeration and steering are operational.
Netmaker
A net maker constructs, assembles or repairs various types of nets for fishing or aquacultural operations. They can work for fishing and aquaculture operations or for net making companies.
Skipper (Ships Master)
The skipper or (ships master) is first in command on the trawler, boat or marine vessel and is responsible for the safety of the vessel, all crew onboard and the planning and navigation required to reach a destination at sea for commercial fishing or trawling. A skipper is highly skilled and holds various licences, tickets and accredited qualifications relevant to the size of vessel they oversee and where they travel to.
