Molecular Biologist
A molecular biologist working in aquaculture conducts research and studies the chemical and physical structure of molecules and the DNA and RNA markers of aquatic systems, species, and plants. This work assists the industry to understand how these markers affect and protect various species from disease and contributes to the genetic selection of brood stock for successful breeding programs.
Aquatic Animal Pathologist
An aquatic animal pathologist studies disease in aquatic species, they test samples like blood or tissue in a laboratory for the identification, diagnosis, and treatment of disease. They may also conduct research into the causes and prevention of aquatic animal disease.
Information Technology (IT) Specialist
An IT specialist designs or manage computer based information systems for an organisation or business. They typically specialise in either computer hardware (physical components) or computer software (networks and operating systems) and may design, operate and maintain technology products.
Aeration Technician
An aeration technician that works in aquaculture is responsible for maintaining aeration pumping systems for optimum water quality in ponds and tanks. An aeration system pumps air into the water to increase oxygen levels and sustain a healthy environment for farmed aquatic species.
Refrigeration Mechanic
A refrigeration mechanic working in ensures that refrigeration and reverse cycle equipment for water temperature, coolers, chillers, freezers and the general working environment is working effectively. Temperature is important for maintaining optimum growing conditions of aquatic species and for food safety in a processing and cold storage environment.
Data Analyst
A data analyst interprets and uses specific information that is collected to identify and report on trends and insights or to identify and solve problems. In aquaculture this could include all types of data sets such as feed data, fish health, water quality, biosecurity, people and capability, logistics or sales and marketing data.
Naval Architect
A naval architect designs all types of passenger or cargo boats, ships, vessels, or floating structures that meet strict Australian Maritime standards for construction, stability, performance, and safety. They create plans and provide specifications for ship builders to follow including the selection of vessel materials, generators, engines, and gearboxes suited to the vessels size, weight, and speed.
ROV (remotely operated vehicle) Pilot
Remotely operated vehicles (ROV's) are operated by specialists on a surface ship, much in the same way aerial drones are operated on land. They are used to inspect underwater structures, monitor the marine environment, maintain and repair damaged equipment at depth, assess stock health and to conduct environmental impact studies amongst a multitude of other tasks that in the past would have been the role of divers to undertake.
ROV Supervisor
An ROV (remotely operated underwater vehicle) supervisor oversees the whole ROV operation and team to ensure that the dive tasks are planned and completed safely and successfully. The ROV supervisor will provide guidance, on the job training and instruction to the ROV pilots as required, to ensure all team members are trained and competent.
Seafood Technologist
A Seafood Technologist is a food research and development specialist that can analyse the physical, chemical, and biological properties of seafood to identify improvement for areas such as food safety and quality, seafood nutritional values, seafood packaging and shelf-life, and new seafood product development and testing.
